What is a rubber dam frame?

1. Definition

Dental rubber dam frames are designed to safely fix rubber dams tightly in place, in order to isolate the tooth or teeth that need to be treated. At the beginning, rubber dam frames are usually made of stainless steel and can be used again and again after being autoclaved. Nowadays, disposable plastic rubber dam frames that are used once or few times become more popular and are considered more hygienic and safe. With its help, rubber dam can be easily and comfortably placed in the patient's mouth.

The design is time-tested by longtime use of many dental professionals and it’s very useful to keep their patients' teeth dry and hygienic during dental procedures.

Considering its importance, it’s necessary to always keep some dam frames in stock for the need of common restorative dental practices.

Owing to its square shape (commonly called “U shape”), it’s easy to hold the dam stable with less tension and offer a large operative field for dentists to operate on patients’ teeth.

2. Anatomically Contoured Dental Rubber Dam Frame

With the development of modern density, more newly designed dental products appear on the market, improving the situation of dental industry and providing better curing experience for both dentists and patients.

After longtime use of the traditional rubber dam frame made of stainless steel, the new type of plastic rubber dam frame with anatomical contours is widely used in dental treatment. Compared with the one made of stainless steel, the new plastic rubber dam frame can provide maximum comfort and safety to patients. Although made of plastic, the new rubber dam frame is strong, durable and resistant to cracking or breaking. Similar to the traditional rubber dam frame made of stainless steel, the plastic one also can be autoclavable or handled in cold disinfection.

As we can see from the photo above, there’re small sharp points outside the frame edges. The use of these small sharp points is to fasten the rubber dam for clear visibility of working field during dental procedures. It’s the same function as the short bars outside the dam frame made of stainless steel.
